UCL Qualifications | An Impressive Win at Malta

The opening of the European season started excellently for Maccabi Haifa after a 0:4 win against the Maltese champions, Hamrun Spartans, at the first UCL qualification round. Pierrot scored twice (41’, 56’), David added another goal during the first half extra time. Khalaili, who was subbed in, set the final score (79’) with his debut goal in Maccabi’s first team. In the 55th minute, the match was stopped and resumed after about 40 minutes. The second leg will take place next week at Sammy Ofer Stadium, in what will be the first home game in the 2023/24 season.

40’ Sabia sends a great incisive pass towards David, but the goalkeeper reaches the ball first and clears it for a corner kick. 

 

41’ GOAL! Sabia crosses the corner kick into the box, Pierrot jumps high, heads the ball into the bottom corner, and scores to put Maccabi first on the scoreboard. 0:1 for Maccabi. 

 

45’+2’ GOAL! Chery receives the ball in the center of the pitch, storms forward all the way to the box, and passes the ball to David, who waited inside the box and he shoots a curved ball that hits the far post and goes in! 0:2 for Maccabi. 

 

Second Half 

 

48’ Chery passes the ball towards Pierrot who chips the ball over his defender and shoots from the edge of the box, but Marchetti collects it. 

 

54’ Substitution for Maccabi: Lior Refaelov in, Din David out.

 

55’ Pierrot receives the ball at the edge of the box and passes it to Refaelov who shoots with a single touch, but the ball goes just next to post and out of play. 

 

57’ GOAL! Sabia passes a short corner kick to Chery who passes it back to Sabia and he crosses the ball into the box, Seck heads it towards Pierrot and the striker heads the ball in from close range. 0:3 for Maccabi.
