Maccabi Haifa welcomed Maccabi Netanya to Sammy Ofer for Matchday 24 of the Israeli Premier League. The Greens were looking to secure three points in an important home match at the end of the season.
The Greens began the match dominating possession. Shlomi Azulay opened the scoring opportunities in the 13th minute. The midfielder hit a free kick that forced Netanya goalkeeper, Amos, into giving up a dangerous rebound. The rebound fell to Klaus, who couldn’t manage to find the back of the net. In the 18th minute, Sallallich crossed a ball from the right flank into the box. Klaus was able to get to the ball, but Amos put the shot out for a corner. Three minutes later, the Haifa pressure paid off and Azulay whipped a ball in from a corner kick, finding Ben Harush in front of goal. The Haifa defender hit a strong shot to put the Greens up 1:0. In the 25th minute, Netanya were able to equalize through Kahlon, making the score 1:1. Less than ten minutes after equalizing, Maccabi Netanya were awarded a penalty kick, and Eran Levy put the away side up 2:1 in the 34th minute.
The Greens began the second half with spirited play and looking equalize. In the 61st minute, manager Fred Rutten used his first change as Omer Demari replaced Klaus in the attacking third of the pitch. Ten minutes later, the manager went with a double change as Ofir Mizrahi and Caio replaced Gal Alberman and Shlomi Azulay. In the 75th minute, Raz Meir crossed a ball from the right flank that found Omer Demari. The striker’s header was strong, but Amos was equal to the task and able to make the save. In the closing minutes, Caio sent a ball in from the left, finding Mizrahi’s head, but the header was just over the goal The Greens were unable to find the equalizer and lost 2:1 to Maccabi Netanya.
