Great win for the title holders

35th fixture of the Israeli Premier League: Maccabi Netanya hosted Maccabi Haifa at Netanya Stadium. Maccabi Haifa won the 2022/23 Israeli championship! Maccabi won its third championship in a row and number 15 in the club’s history after a huge 5:1 away victory over Netanya. Chery, Abu Fani, Pierrot, and Saba (brace) scored for Maccabi in this historic night.

Maccabi’s line-up: Josh Cohen, Dylan Batubinsika, Sean Goldberg, Rami Gershon, Pierre Cornud, Mohammed Abu Fani, Tjaronn Chery (C), Dia Saba, Dolev Haziza, Din David, Frantzdy Pierrot.

 

 

 

Kick Off 

 

7’ Chery sends a clever incisive pass towards David who breaks into the box and shoots, but the ball hits the wrong side of the net. 

 

16’ GOAL! Saba crosses a brilliant ball into the box, Pierrot heads it down gently toward Chery who shoots it powerfully straight into the net! 0:1 for Maccabi!!

 

41’ GOAL. A counter-attack by Netanya ends with a cross into the box, Zlatanovic shoves it in. 1:1

 

45’ Haziza takes a corner kick and passes it short to Saba who shoots a curved ball that just slightly misses the target. 

 

Second Half 

 

46’ Substitution for Maccabi: Mahmoud Jaber in, Din David out.

 

50’ Two opportunities one after the other when Jaber receives the ball from Chery, and the midfielder kicks a sharp ball that hits the post, Cornud is first to the rebound and crosses an accurate ball straight to Pierrot, who heads it powerfully, but the ball goes near the post and out of play. 

 

53’ GOAL! Abu Fani sends a long ball forwards from Maccabi’s half of the pitch, Pierrot reaches to it and once again heads the ball down to a teammate, this time Saba is the target, and the latter storms into the box and rolls the ball into the net! 1:2 for Maccabi. 

 

58’ GOAL! Netanya’s goalkeeper collects the ball with his hands after a back pass from one of his defenders and Maccabi is awarded with a free kick from inside the box. Abu Fani takes the free kick and shoots an unstoppable shot straight to the center of the net. 1:3 for Maccabi. 

 

70’ Cornud passes the ball into the box to Saba who shoots it with a single touch, the goalkeeper blocks the attempt, Saba also shoots the rebound, but the ball is cleared from the goal line by a local defender. 

 

76’ Chery breaks forward a few meters, passes by his defender and shoots from 20 meters to the far corner, but the goalkeeper denies it.  

 

79’ Double substitution for Maccabi: Goni Naor and Raz Meir in, Mohammed Abu Fani and Rami Gershon out.

 

83’ GOAL! Penalty for Maccabi! Pierrot shoots the ball to the bottom corner, the goalkeeper blocks it, but Pierrot scores the rebound with a nice header. 1:4 for Maccabi!

 

84’ Double substitution for Maccabi: Ben Sahar and Nikita Rukavytsya in, Dolev Haziza and Frantzdy Pierrot out.

 

85’ GOAL! Saba shoots a fantastic curved ball to the top far corner and scores the fifth goal for Maccabi and it’s now 1:5. 

 

90’+4’ Final whistle! Maccabi Haifa wins the championship for the third time in a row and the 15th overall, which awards Maccabi with a third star on the club’s emblem, and all this while playing in the Champions League this season! Come on you Greens!
